WEB 2016-2017 students...you amazed me with your ...PLANNED ACT of LOVE.
It was a honour to have this phenomenal group of students be my last group of leadership students at KLO. I will miss you. I will miss it.
THANK YOU! Gratitude.
"Success without integrity is failure."
WEB LEADERSHIP 9
WEB is a year long district-wide transition program built on the belief that students can help students succeed. It provides a common process to successfully articulate students from elementary to middle school.
The goals of WEB are:
-to provide a structure in which students make real connections with each other
-to guide the seventh graders towards both academic and social success in middle school
-to provide ninth graders with leadership and mentorship opportunities
-to develop positive school climate and culture
WEB is one way that we help students feel capable, connected and contributing at KLO.
WEB Leadership is a course designed to help you reach your full potential as a student leader. In this course you will learn new leadership skills as well as enhance the natural skills that you already have.
WEB Leadership is about creating positive memorable moments for all of the students at Ecole KLO Middle School. KLO leadership students work closely with grade 7 students through the WEB program. It is about contributing to our school’s culture and creating a place that’s right for all of us.
Events are a part of this creative process! This year we will organize some events that have been around for a long time. Honoring traditions is important! But, we will also be trying out some new stuff; mixing it up a bit!
This course will teach you, entertain you and most importantly, challenge you!
Don't be afraid! Step out of your comfort zone!

IT MATTERS – THOUGHTS FOR THE WEEK – OFFER TO HELP
Whether we like to admit it or not, we have all had moments in life where we needed some help. Maybe you’re experiencing this right now. But the funny, and absolutely strange part about most of us, is that we really don’t like asking for help. What’s with that? When is the last time you asked someone for help on something? Then consider the last time you actually needed some help and wanted to ask, but for some reason didn’t ask. We can explore “why” you didn’t ask at a later date; but for now, we are going to flip this script. This week we want you to OFFER TO HELP. First off, since we just established that most of us are not so great at asking for help, wouldn’t it be nice to just offer it? You know when someone needs help… you can see it in their face and hear it their voice. You can tell when someone looks lost or overwhelmed. It’s easy. So, just ask. And, even if they say, “No,” because we know that will be their first response, ask again and let them know that you would be happy to. There is no greater gesture of service, love, and support than offering to help. You are saying that you are more than happy to give your time. That you see them and that they matter to you. And, that is awesome. Offering to help matters.

IT MATTERS - THOUGHTS FOR THE WEEK - KNOW IT'S ENOUGH
Bigger, stronger, faster, more, more, more. Sound familiar? If 12-ounces wasn’t enough, now you can get 24, 32, or even 64… because 64-ounces is certainly better than just 12. Or is it?
At what point do we hit the law of diminishing returns? In other words, when is too much actually hurting us more than it is benefiting us? This is a question that we can ask ourselves about a lot of things. And, frankly, we need to ask that question way more often. For, if we knew the answer and acted accordingly, we could eliminate so much of the noise, the excess, the waste and create space for everything that matters… like appreciation.
So, today, right now, KNOW THAT IT’S ENOUGH. Remember when you got your “first” anything? Your first job? Your first date? Your first pair of dress shoes? Your first bike? Your first gaming device? Your first phone? There was something special in each of those moments. You were a kid in a candy shop. The world was full of wonder. And, now you have 10 pairs of shoes and actually want more. You are lucky enough to have a phone…and now you want another, something newer, different, better. Let’s get back to the basics. It’s time to appreciate everything we have… really, it’s enough, even if it’s just a little. Knowing it’s enough matters.

IT MATTERS – THOUGHTS FOR THE WEEK – EVERYONE HAS A STORY
Everyone has a story. Everyone's story is unique. And our story is pretty much what makes us who we are today. All the good and the bad. The thrills and the struggles. The constructive relationships and the ones a little opposite of that. But how many people in your life truly know your story? Sure they get to see your Facebook and Instagram highlight reels, you share snippets, but what about the stuff underneath the surface? Not the stuff that you do, rather the stuff that makes you who you are. That's the space where we like to hangout. That's where lives change, where people transform. In our opinion, that's the stuff that matters. Sure exposing people to our deepest secrets can be a little scary. We totally get that and believe that those might only be suited for your very nearest and dearest. After all, we do need to protect our hearts and be careful of who we let inside. But let's get more much basic than that. Let's just start with your ideas, your thoughts, your opinions, your talents, your feelings. How often do you express any of those? The truth is that most of us are not very good at it. We hold back. We avoid judgment. Don't believe us? Just watch two people trying to figure out where to go to lunch. Making that simple decision often takes as long as the actual lunch. Let’s be different. Let’s allow ourselves to express ourselves. Let’s share ourselves and connect with others in a super-authentic and honest way. Go head first, get ready to let the world meet the true you. Being expressive matters.

IT MATTERS – THOUGHTS FOR THE WEEK – MEAN YOUR MESSAGE
We are in an extremely interesting time right now. Social media and the Internet have provided platforms for anyone to share their opinions with virtually no accountability. These opinions can be scarred by untruths, contradictions and well, some very mean-spirited messages. And words have basically become these combinations of letters that we throw around with no moral compass or regard for the damage they can do. What happened to the days when our words were held to a higher standard? They were true, they had meaning, and we took responsibility for how we handled them? Well, let’s raise this bar back up. It’s time to MEAN YOUR MESSAGE. Your words are powerful. They can tear someone down or lift someone up. They can encourage goodness and positivity in the word, or they can be gossip and fan the flames of hate and negativity. But knowing we have the ability to use our words for good, we’re wondering why we would ever choose the opposite? Let’s think before we speak. Let’s only say it if we really mean. And, let’s own what we post and how we communicate. And, if we can’t do these things, well, maybe some messages are just better left unsaid. Meaning your message matters.

IT MATTERS - THOUGHTS FOR THE WEEK - BE AN ARTIST
Art is absolutely one of the universe’s greatest gifts. There are the obvious types of art, like painting, dance, music, photography, graffiti, film, sculpture, and others. Then there are the less obvious, but equally as awe-inspiring examples, like brain surgery, the engineering of the Mars Rover, or the building of a skyscraper. And, if that doesn’t cover enough, there’s the beautiful sunset, the wings of a butterfly, or an orchid flower. See, art is everywhere and art is amazing. And, frankly, a world without it is pretty darn depressing. So, this week, we want to bring even more artistic expression to life, we want you to BE AN ARTIST. Okay, we can hear it already… “But I’m not an artist.” “I can’t.” “But what if it’s ugly?” To this we say, “Stop.” “Enough.”
We promise that you are an artist. Everyone is an artist. It’s just a matter of connecting that meaning to something you love doing. Are you a good cook? Then, you’re an artist. Are you a good friend? Then, you’re an artist. Are you a good painter? Don’t know? Then maybe you should try it for the first time. This is also the fun of art. It is just there for the making. It is simply up to us to express ourselves and create it. Oh, and to do it without judgment. Being a perfectionist doesn’t matter. Being an artist does. Art matters.

IT MATTERS - THOUGHTS FOR THE WEEK - BE FREE
Ever been at a traffic light when you saw the person in the car next to you rocking out and singing at the top of their lungs? Ever seen newlyweds dancing their first dance or kids playing in the pool? And, did you notice how big of a smile you had on your face while checking them out? There’s just something about watching people letting go and being absolutely consumed by what they are doing that brings an instant sense of joy to all of us. They don’t care what others are thinking. They don’t care what they look like. The truth is, no one else even exists in those moments. It is what’s in front of them and that’s it. They’re in the freedom zone. And we all smile when we see this is because maybe we wish we had a little bit more of that in our own lives. So, let’s be free. It’s time to get out of our own way… get out of our heads. Be silly. Be a kid again. Jump in rain puddles, sing in the mirror, dance fully in class, do cartwheels across your lawn. Just do it… and have an absolute blast. Consider yourself the King or Queen of Joy, and the Court Jester too. Express yourself like only you can. Laugh. Inspire others to join in. Our world needs more of all of this, so let’s create it. Being free. It matters.

IT MATTERS - THOUGHTS FOR THE WEEK - GETTING SHARPER
We live in the Age of Information. Literally everything is at our fingertips. In an instant, we can research anything we want. We can watch instructional videos on how to build or cook anything under the sun. We can learn languages by pressing “play” and “pause” while driving. It’s all there for the taking. But does that mean we actually take advantage of it? Or is most of our time spent online or on smart phones a little less productively and constructively? Based on top-searched words on Google, the answers are pretty clear. Go ahead, Google that.
But now, we really want to focus on something in a way that leads to GETTING SHARPER. What is something you are super passionate about? What is something that you love to do or love to talk about? Sports, history, scrapbooking, playing the piano? Maybe it is a hobby or maybe it is something that can propel your performance at work or at school. What’s the answer to that question you’ve always had? Only you know what “it” is. How about you dig into it deeper. Become an expert. Know it like the back of your hand. Be a well-rounded person. Take advantage of our capacity to know and learn so much over our lifetimes. Go fit it. Getting sharper. It matters.

IT MATTERS - THOUGHTS FOR THE WEEK - JUST DO IT
You have heard them all… “The proof is in the pudding.” “Actions speak louder than words.” “There is no shortage of good ideas, only good ideas executed on.” Do these phrases stick with anyone? How about we now START DOING. Let us explain… understanding music theory is an important part of learning the guitar, but you will never actually play guitar if you don’t pick one up and get strumming. This goes for anything in life. Want to be a great public speaker, programmer, tennis player, or friend? Then go “DO” it. Don’t just think about it or talk about it. Actually, do it. And, in the spirit of being relevant, here is why this matters. To be pertinent or to have significant bearing on something, one can only come from a place of understanding. It’s easy to have an opinion about things we have never tried. But being relevant requires us to speak from our know-how and direct experiences. And, if you think about it, “experiencing” is a verb. So go do. Doing - it matters.

IT MATTERS - THOUGHTS FOR THE WEEK - LISTEN CLOSELY
There is a pulse in the world. A sound. A beat. Our ears are constantly bombarded by noise. The honk of a horn, the bass of a stereo, the ring of a phone, the bark of a dog, the sound of an alarm, the sirens of an ambulance. Can you hear it all now? All of this noise has almost become white sound for us. Not good. Not only do we not hear it anymore, but it also makes it difficult for us to focus and be present when we truly should be listening. We are distracted constantly which means we are not “connected” or “closely tied to” what is right in front of us. So, LISTEN CLOSELY. Active and engaged listening is one of most powerful ways to not only learn more, but is also the best way to tap into and communicate empathy and compassion. Listening one hundred percent shows the people we love we care. It is always the place to start when helping others… and even ourselves. We let people know that they matter to us when we listen to them, which makes them feel relevant and, in turn, does the same for us. Dial in. Be aware. Be attentive. Listen in. And, be a sponge. It will lead to being relevant in every way. And, it will empower you to be completely in the game… of life. Listening closely - it matters.

IT MATTERS - THOUGHTS FOR THE WEEK - CHERISH LOVE
Besides food, shelter, and water, there is one thing that none of us can live without. It is something so deep and so connected to the core of who we are as humans. It warms our hearts. It lets us know that we matter and that someone cares about us. And, truthfully, it never really looks the same way twice, because it comes in so many special packages. It’s called, “Love.” It’s the stuff that touches our soul and just so happens to be the topic of nearly every #1-music hit. So, it’s time for us to love LOVE, or to CHERISH LOVE. What are things that you love more than anything? It could be a person, a pet, an experience, good food, getting out in nature… the list is endless. More importantly, what is it that you love so much about them? Have you really ever broken that down? And, what about the people in your life? What do they love more than anything and how do you help to bring more love into their life? See, one of the most magical aspects of love is that it can be both given and receive and the impact is nearly identical. Everyone and everything wins with love. And, there can never be too much of it. So, let’s create the most loving world possible. Cherishing love, it matters.

IT MATTERS - THOUGHTS FOR THE WEEK - BE A TEAM PLAYER
Are you a marathon runner or on a relay team? Do you like to play singles or doubles in tennis? Or, are you a swimmer or a water polo player? At first glance, these options seem pretty similar… you either like to run, play tennis, or swim. But, they are actually quite different. They are either individual sports or team sports, and they attract very different personality types because they require distinctly different mindsets. And, for the sake of sports, we say, “It’s up to you, whatever floats your boat.” But, when it comes to life, we think you agree that it’s all about “team.” So, let’s BE A TEAM PLAYER. Ask the greats. No single accomplishment was ever achieved alone; they required great teams. There’s no doubt that our world requires cooperation and collaboration from all of us, even when we don’t feel like it. So, “Go team!” Who do you need on your team and what roles do you want them play? How can they help you be great? And, on the flip side, whose team are you on and how are you going to help them? There’s no question that life’s a whole lot better, when we’re doing it together. Being a team player - it matters.

IT MATTERS - THOUGHTS FOR THE WEEK - BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND
We love maps. We love them so much that they have had to evolve just to keep up with our need to see what’s around us and where we are going. From fold-up maps to Google Maps, maps have done their part to become even user-friendlier. They now even show us the quickest way to get from point A to point B and where to grab a coffee along the way. That’s pretty dialed in. However, if you think about it, maps only work because we have a destination in mind. Without a destination, there’s no need for a map. But isn’t that the same in life? It’s impossible to achieve a goal, if you don’t have one. So, let’s see if we can’t zero in on our personal destinations for this year. This week, let’s BEGIN WITH THE END in mind and see what our maps tell us. What is a life goal that you are “destined” to achieve this year? Maybe it’s a long-term goal that will span over the 12 months. Or, maybe there are several shorter-term goals, either related to your long-term or to several distinct parts of your life. The point is that we can’t get there until we know where we want to go. Beginning with the end in mind – it matters.

IT MATTERS - THOUGHTS FOR THE WEEK - BEING AWARE
Raise your hand if you consider yourself a disconnected zombie. No? Well, think again. We get 168 hours per week. Work or school takes up at least 40 of those hours. Sleeping, another 49 of them. Add 3 hours a day for eating, bathing, dressing, chores, and there goes another 21. That leaves… drumroll please, 58 hours per week to do anything else we want or need to. So, what do you do with those 58 hours? Well, if you are like the average person, you spend 50 of those hours looking at media for entertainment value. Not spending quality time with friends or family, volunteering, or going out into the world and interacting with others. Yep. Our “free” time is spent alone with our screens. But in the spirit of being civil, we would like all of us to BE AWARE and tune in to something very different. Being civil requires us to be with one another. To look people in the eye and actually share niceties. We don’t physically live on 7.3 billion individual islands, so let’s stop acting like we do. Being civil means we “get it” that we are a part of something bigger and engage in a way that shows it. Civilization is just one big organism made up of people… us. So let’s snap out of our zombie-states. Being aware – it matters.

IT MATTERS - THOUGHTS FOR THE WEEK - BE POLITE
At the root of being civil lies a language, a set of rules, which exists in order for a civilization to thrive. It is sometimes difficult to know every nuance of this language, but, without a doubt, you know it when you see or hear it. It makes you smile and feel good inside. It makes you feel respected and seen. It gives you hope and a desire to pay it forward. When we hear the opposite or nothing at all, however, it makes us want to crawl into a hole and somehow dampens our belief in humanity. The language we speak of is, “Manners.” How is it that manners have earned a new name? They’re now called: “Random acts of kindness.” Someone held a door open for someone else. Someone picked something up they, themselves, didn’t drop. And, dare we say that someone said “Thank you” or sent a note after receiving something? By definition, they are now “random,” but actually, they are not random at all. They happen at precise times, when doing the civil thing is an available option. And, they are performed by people with manners. We are all presented with opportunities to use our manners; the only random part is whether or not we do. Using your manners – it matters.

IT MATTERS - THOUGHTS FOR THE WEEK - FLIP THE SCRIPT
We all have “that” person in our life. You know the one whose glass is always half empty. They can’t help but see the outcome as always being a bad one and there is rarely any hope for anything exciting or good. Not even miracles have a shot with these folks. Well, without being to direct, have you ever been that person? Maybe not all the time, but just now and then? Don’t worry if your answer is, “Yes.” In a world with so much negativity on TV, in conversations around us, and on social media, it is easy to get sucked into that caustic zone. But what if we say: “Enough already.” It’s time for all of us to FLIP THE SCRIPT. Boats weren't invented by only focusing on the sinking of things. And planets aren’t explored by assuming we can never get any closer to them. The same goes for our lives and our world… we will only create what we hope for with our positivity turned to the “on” position. Let’s be inspired and focus on the good and do so with our whole-hearts. Let’s believe in a better social ethos that everyone can strive for. Better yet, let’s create it. Because when we change our thoughts on the inside, we change our words and actions on the outside. Flipping the script – it matters.

IT MATTERS - THOUGHTS FOR THE WEEK - BELIEVE IN OTHERS
We are powerful beings in many ways. Our words, our actions, our thoughts affect not only our own lives, but also the lives of those around us. But does everyone embrace just how powerful they are and how much power they have to inspire others. With just a single word or an endearing gesture, we can change someone’s day in an instant. And, when enough of us “get” this and constantly put our powers into action, we can literally changes lives. It’s not complicated. It is simply a choice… Do I lift someone up or put someone down? Do I listen closely or only half-listen? Do I express and show my true support or disempower? Let's BELIEVE IN OTHERS. Somewhere along the way, someone believed in you. Because of that person, you were able to soar to new heights, conquer a fear, or become a better version of yourself. Well, just as they did for you, you get to do for others. If you do it already, then do it some more. Or, if this is something new for you, now’s the time to step up and watch people take off. Believing in others – it matters.

IT MATTERS - THOUGHTS FOR THE WEEK - WHY NOT?
We have our good friend Socrates to share for something. It’s the question, “Why?” We call it the “Socratic Method,” which has been the foundation for all logic and philosophy in the western world for the last 2,500 years. Well, it’s time to introduce Socrates to our new friend. Her name is, “Hope,” and she has a new question to ask. No, she is not saying that Socrates was wrong, she just has a new 2017-version for his question. This week, Hope wants us to ASK, “WHY NOT?” Just imagine what it would look like if more people asked the question, “Why Not?” Isn’t there something about “Why Not?” that says, “Watch me” or “Don’t limit me” or “It’s possible.” For example: Why not take better care of our health? Why not show one another more love and kindness? Why not shoot for the stars? See, answering “Why not?” is actually harder to answer than “Why?” Don’t believe us? Ask someone one of those three questions and see if they can give you a good reason “not to” do what you are asking. And, don’t feel like you need to stop with those questions. How many “Why Not?” questions can you come up with? Asking “Why not?” – it matters.

IT MATTERS - THOUGHTS FOR THE WEEK - DIVIDE BY TWO
How is it that every year over 700 million people in the world are chronically malnourished, yet one-third of all the food produced in the world is lost or wasted? How is it that we are using our planet’s natural resources at an alarming rate; yet only one of the lanes on the freeway is for carpooling? What if it was the other way around? Think more of us would become carpoolers if there was only one lane for non-carpooling? Taking care of our environment is, in some ways, simply a matter of math. So this week, DIVIDE BY TWO. Two people sharing a car just divided their car usage in half. Watering your lawn every other day just cut that water use in half. Using your bathroom towel twice just cut your towel laundry in half. We can keep going but think you get the point. So what can you cut in half? We want to challenge you to make that list and go for it. Sometimes “saving the environment” seems like a big job and it’s hard to know where to start; but, with a little bit of awareness and cutting our usage in half, it quickly becomes attainable. After all, dividing by two can literally double the positive impact we can make. Dividing by – it matters.

IT MATTERS - THOUGHTS FOR THE WEEK - MOVE YOUR BODY
These days, the average person sleeps about seven and a half hours per night and sits for nine and a half hours per day. Combined, that’s around seventeen hours of non-activity. You may or may not think that’s so bad, after all, you need your sleep, and work and school often requires sitting. But it’s actually not a good thing. And then knowing that the average person still has six and a half hours of non-sitting and non-sleeping time left in their day, doesn’t really guarantee that much of that time is dedicated to moving much either. Well, not to judge you, but in some ways… to judge all of us… the jury is in. Not moving is not good. Not moving our bodies is one of the worst things we can do for our health. The list of negative effects is both a long and scary one. So, this week, it’s time to MOVE YOUR BODY. The good news is that the list of positive effects of exercise is way longer and pretty dang motivating. So, what’s it going to be? A walk in the park? A jog or a swim? Dancing or yoga? You don’t have to go run a marathon tomorrow… that can come later. For now, just dive into doing more activity than you do today. Then, for sure, you’ll be moving in the right direction. IT MATTERS - THOUGHTS FOR THE WEEK - CELEBRATING JOY
Are you ready to smile? Are you ready to laugh… like till it hurts? Hope so. Typically, when taking action on getting healthier, the two areas that get most of the attention are diet and exercise. Calories in and calories out, right? Pretty simple equation. However, there is a third part to the health equation, that some would argue, is even more important than diet and exercise. It’s called, “Emotional Health.” These days, most experts agree that our health should be viewed more holistically, or with an understanding of how our physical, mental, and emotional health are connected and how these elements affect each other. Think about it. When we are happy, we make healthier food choices. When we eat healthier, we use our brains more fully and have more energy to exercise. And, when we exercise, it releases endorphins and relieves the stress that can be a drag on our emotional and physical health. So, it’s time to CELEBRATE JOY, because it’s one of the simplest things we can do to boost our health. Being joyful lowers blood pressure, increases brain activity, speeds up our metabolism, and strengthens our immune system. Oh, and it’s just flat out fun. What could be better than that? Nothing. So, let’s get happy. Celebrating joy - it matters.Credit: Every Monday Matters.

IT MATTERS - THOUGHTS FOR THE WEEK - BE IN AWE
Think for a minute. Think about something that literally took your breath away. Maybe it was holding your newborn for the first time. Maybe it was lifting your first trophy at a basketball tournament or making the winning shot. Or, maybe it was getting your license and driving by yourself for the first time. When moments like this happen, life is good. We feel joy. We smile on the inside and out, and we experience a sense of warmth and wonder. We think this is awesome, literally. So…BE IN AWE. Sure, there are some big and awesome moments in life, but what about all of the moments in between? When you think about it, we’re surrounded by awe-inspiring moments each and every day. What about when your friend gives you the perfect hug at the perfect time? What about when the spring wild flowers are firing at full force? Or, what about the feeling you get that comes with a genuine and heartfelt “Thank you”? We are surrounded by awesome. We just need to do a better job of seeing and feeling it. For every single time our heart beats and our lungs fill with air, we are given something to feel awe over. So stop and be sure to take it all in. Being awestruck – it matters. IT MATTERS - THOUGHTS FOR THE WEEK - PLAY THE HERO
Every classic story has a few main characters – the villain, the victim, and the hero. Think about any Marvel movie or episode of CSI or great fiction book. And, really good stories have a way of connecting us to each of the characters. But now, let’s look at your life and try to imagine it as its own classic story. After all, you do have a story. The question is, “What character are you playing?” We hope it is not the villain. And, we certainly hope not the victim. So what’s left? Yes, you guessed it…PLAY THE HERO. Unfortunately, our world has plenty of villains and victims already, but seemingly never enough heroes. But let’s be clear on what it means to be the “Hero.” No, you don’t need to don a cape or save the world. You don’t even need to shoot spider webs from your hands. All that is needed is a hyper-awareness of opportunities where you can be there for someone. Give someone a call, volunteer, listen, smile, or go the extra mile by surprising your neighbors by washing their cars or offering to babysit. The deed might be small, but the impact mighty. So why not save the world…one action at a time? The world definitely needs more heroes. Playing the hero – it matters. Credit: Every Monday Matters.

IT MATTERS - THOUGHTS FOR THE WEEK - BE AUTHENTIC
Everyone likes the real deal. We don’t want fake. We don’t want dishonest. We want the truth. But, no matter how much we believe we need it, the truth is, we’re not so great at it. We lie to ourselves, hide our flaws, and put on that fake smile even when we’re at our lowest. We think you’d agree, living this way is not serving any of us well. It’s not good on the inside and it’s an absolute deal-breaker for relationships. If we can’t be truthful with one another, how can we grow, thrive, or be true to ourselves? So, it’s more than time we LIVE AUTHENTICALLY. Our world is in dire need of genuine. We need to mean what we say and say what we mean. We need to take ownership of our actions and stop pointing fingers. And, we need honesty if we’re going to make things better together. No more highlight reels on social media. No more veneer. Let’s step out from the shadows with all our imperfections. And then let’s give each other some breathing room to just be ourselves. Doesn’t that sound better already? Be your true-you, because you matter. You are awesome. Don’t worry, no one will judge. And, if they do, then, tell them to get real with themselves. Being authentic - it matters. IT MATTERS - THOUGHTS FOR THE WEEK - GO ALL IN
So many choices, so little time. There’s no shortage of options in life. We can do this, or we can do that. We can do this while doing that. We are constantly multi-tasking or keeping an eye out for the next best option. So much so that we completely lose touch with ourselves, and our ability to focus on any one thing gets compromised.
When was the last time you did something with your whole heart and soul and brain? When was the last time you made a big decision and didn’t second-guess your choice? The truth is that the idea of fully committing to something has become more of a struggle for us. But why not GO ALL IN. Yes, it’s time to make a decision and see it through. No more, “one foot in, one foot out.” No more, “let me get back to you.” It’s time to make a decision and commit to it. Jump in headfirst and give it your all. Do it at work, at home, in your relationships, and, yes, even at the gym. Don’t even start something unless you plan to finish it. Imagine how empowered and inspired you’ll be, not to mention to all those around you. People with intention, focus, and an unwavering will to accomplish something are leaders. So let’s lead. Going all in - it matters.Credit: Every Monday Matters.

IT MATTERS - THOUGHTS FOR THE WEEK - MAKING MEMORIES
Do you remember when you first learned how to swim? Do you remember your first pet? Do you remember your first…[whatever]? There is just something about the word “first” that instantly makes a moment unforgettable. It might be a good unforgettable or something you’d rather forget, but in either case, memories are important. Why? Because they let us relive all the moments that matter to us… especially the ones that are amazing, hilarious, sweet, and special. So, this week, MAKE A MEMORY. Wow, so many options and choices to make. Where will you go? What will you do? Who will join you? When will you go? But isn’t this the fun of it? How creative can you get this week? Please don’t spend too much time taking photos and staring at your phones to record the memory. The focus should be on the experience itself and the people you are with. After all, there is nothing too memorable about people staring at their phones. So go enjoy the adventure and make a memory. Making memories - it matters.

IT MATTERS - THOUGHTS FOR THE WEEK - BEING HUMAN
At first glance, this might seem like a strange focus for a theme. After all, I'm pretty sure you're "human." Nothing shocking so far. But there's more to it than just that. Just because we are all members of what scientists call "Homo sapiens," it still leaves plenty of room to argue how "human" we really act. So, what makes us "Homo sapiens"? In Latin, Homo sapiens means "wise man." We can be wise, when we choose to be. But what about our ability to feel? Our ability to create? Our ability to connect and communicate? Our ability to know right from wrong and strive for a society that promotes the common good? This is the human part of us that we want to dive into. Why? Because there are endless opportunities to be better, a better human and a better group of humans. We can express ourselves better. We can choose kinder words and actions. We can be better friends and parents. We can even be better strangers to one another. So let's embrace our humanness and humanity. It's got to be all about us, "Homo sapiens." And, since you are one of them, you should be able to ace this. Being a better human – it matters.

IT MATTERS - THOUGHTS FOR THE WEEK - MAKING AN INTRO
Remember your first day of school or at a new job? Remember that group exercise class you walked into or that room full of strangers at an event you recently attended? There is something about the dynamic of bringing a group of strangers together that causes us to short circuit. Again, we are human, we have the ability to communicate and connect with other people, but as soon as we get in an environment with unfamiliar people, we lose all of our humanness. We get quiet. We do not look people in the eyes. We stumble over our words and overthink everything. But there is an easy solution to all of this. Get ready to MAKE AN INTRO. Instead of all of that wasted energy that leads to even more awkwardness, what if we just immediately engaged someone and said, “Hi. My name is Paul, what’s your name?” Wow. Rocket science? Nope. Then, if you are feeling really brave, or just human, you can follow up with: “How are you doing today?” “Where are you from?” “What is something I should know about you?” The questions are endless, it just a matter of asking the right ones for that moment… or asking something period. It can make a difference. Be the one to make that difference. Making an intro – it matters.

IT MATTERS - THOUGHTS FOR THE WEEK - JUST LISTEN
“So, I was thinki…” “You know, wha…” “Hey, what you do is yo…” “I would lov…” Ever been in a situation when you were trying to say something and someone would not let you finish your sentence? Or, how about when you were saying something and, at the same time, someone else starts saying something to you and it becomes a game of who can say it the loudest, or who can "one up" the other? Both cases are great examples of a “communication breakdown.” But the truth is that interrupting someone can communicate more to that person than the words we actually used in the interruption. In fact, in the act of interrupting someone, what we are “saying,” without saying it, is that we are not listening. Yet, we expect people to listen to us. Hmm. So, how do we help with these communication break downs? Let’s choose to LISTEN FIRST. Easy, right? Well, the reality is that listening nowadays doesn’t come very naturally for us. We're distracted by our phones, we’re lost in our own thoughts, we start thinking about what we’ll say next, or we just start talking. But doing any of these makes it impossible for us to also be listening. So let’s choose to listen first. It’s the only way we can all be heard. Listening first – it matters.

IT MATTERS - THOUGHTS FOR THE WEEK - EDUCATE YOURSELF
We live in the Information Age. That’s almost an understatement now. It’s hard to believe that just 20 years ago the Internet, as we know it, didn’t even exist. Neither did smart phones. Imagine not having the Internet or a smart phone. Yikes. Kind of turns the stomach doesn’t it? Why? Because we have all witnessed and experienced the computerization of everything and our lives now completely depend on them. In some ways that is a scary thought. But it’s also pretty cool, if we embrace it in a healthy way. So, what does that look like?
Living in the Information Age means that we are bombarded by information at every turn. What is real? What is fake? What do we believe? What do we buy into? What are we consuming? Because if we are just using computers for things like gossip, bullying, sharing falsehoods, and entertainment, aren’t we kind of missing out on something super-amazing? Wouldn’t it benefit us more to use technology to better ourselves? To learn history? To explore a different part of the world? To grow? To spread love? To share in the spirit of connection? Maybe, just maybe, you will. Educating yourself – it matters.
